Elections for all New York City Education Councils are coming in January 2023!
Parents across the city have an opportunity to help shape policies and priorities for NYC schools by voting for their representatives on a council or by running for a council seat themselves. There are 32 Community Education Councils, one for each NYC community school district, and four citywide councils. Learn about NYC Education Councils!

I want to run for an Education Council.....What do I need to do?
In order to run for a seat on an Education Council, you need to first sign up for an NYC Schools Account (NYCSA) and link all your children attending DOE schools to it. The account must be in your name.
If you do not have a NYCSA or need assistance registering your children to your existing account, please contact your Parent Coordinator or Family Leadership Coordinator (FLC).
Once you have your NYCSA, you can apply online for any Education Council you qualify for. But you don’t need to collect documents or research which councils you qualify for-the application will draw information from NYCSA and automatically present you with the relevant councils.
If you do not have internet access at home, your Parent Coordinator or FLC can help you access a computer at a school or district office. You can also call 311 for information on accessing computers at public libraries.
(The application can be completed in 5-10 minutes. Although the personal statement is not obligatory, you are strongly advised to submit one. The statement has a 500-word limit and you will be able to return to where you left off if you cannot finish the application in one session.)

What is a Community Education Council?
New York City’s district schools are spread across 32 individual districts in the five boroughs. For each, there is an 11-member CEC. Nine members must be district school parents with children in pre-K through eighth grade, and two are appointees of the borough president, who can be residents or local business owners.
There are also citywide councils representing high schoolers, students learning English as a new language, students with disabilities, and District 75, which serves students with the most complex disabilities.

How are Education Councils different from PA/PTAs?
PA/PTAs are subject to Chancellor’s Regulation A-660, whereas the powers and duties of the Education Councils are specified in NY State Education Law §2590.
Community Education Councils:
Review the district’s educational programs and assess their effect on student achievement.
Hold at least one public meeting per month with the superintendent, during which the public may speak so that parents and the community have a voice and a public forum to air their concerns.
Submit an annual evaluation of the superintendent to the Chancellor.
Provide input to the Chancellor and the Panel for Educational Policy on district concerns.
Serve as liaisons to School Leadership Teams.
Approve zoning lines as submitted by the superintendent.
Hold public hearings on the district’s capital needs and submit a plan to the Chancellor.
Hold a Town Hall with the Chancellor.
